William Monroe Wicker Scott

William “Bill” Monroe Wicker Scott, Sr., age 81, passed away on September 9, 2024 surrounded by family at his home in Savannah, GA.  There will be a Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2024 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Tybee Island where Bill was a member. 

Bill is survived by his wife of 35 years, Maria DeRojas Scott; son, William “Bill” M.W. (Michele & Scott, Jr. of Kennesaw, GA; daughters, Barbara Mann of Raleigh, NC, Leslie & Scott Scheve of Raleigh, NC, Sandra & Jordan Wright of Bellbrook, OH, and Elie & Mike Pierce of Salt Lake City, UT; 11 grandchildren: Margaret Mann, Sarah Mann, Evan Scheve, Claire Scheve, Max Scott, Will Scott, Bryson Wright, Zachary Wright, Lindsey Wright, Annabelle “Ellie” Wright, and Michael Pierce; sister Colby Lee of Pine Bluff, AR, and many nieces and nephews who were dear to him.  Bill was preceded in death by his parents Cole and Elizabeth “Bettie” (Wicker) Scott and his cherished daughter Cristina Scott. 

Bill was born on September 4, 1943 in Charlotte, NC where he spent his early childhood before his family moved to Atlanta, GA. When he was just 16 years old, Bill graduated from Northside High School where he ran track and set a record in the hurdles.  He earned an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Math from Emory University. He then obtained a Doctor of Medicine degree with honors from the Medical College of Georgia and completed his internship at Grady Memorial Hospital and residencies at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.  Bill served as a physician in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam war and was promoted to the rank of Major.  

As a psychiatrist, Bill was a pioneer in the treatment of alcohol and drug addiction in Atlanta, GA serving as medical director of both psychiatry and addiction medical units at Peachford Hospital and Ridgeview Institute while also establishing both private and group practices to serve his patients. As an expert in his field, Bill testified in front of the U.S. Congress regarding the addictive dangers of Xanax.  He was passionate about providing care to his patients. 

His interests and hobbies centered around family and being home surrounded by his children and grandchildren.  Bill loved his family, and this extended out to reach his large extended family. He welcomed all to his home and was a gracious host to 21 loud Cubans who all spent the night at his home every summer. Bill was a quiet, gentle, loving soul, who was committed to serving others. He will be greatly missed.
